This year's Haunted House was based on a story written by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, one of the most influential odd story writers of American literature. His story "Herbert West: Reanimator" was our inspiration.

In the story (which can be viewed here) a young doctor and his assistant experiment with a concoction that is capable of restarting those chemical reactions within cells, essentially life itself. Things often don't go as planned. Throughout his research, he raised many a man from the dead, most of them becoming mindless violent beasts apt to kill and cannibalize all who cross them. Dr. West believes that the key to a successful reanimation is freshness and seeks out corpses better suited for his ghastly experiments. The good doctor soon resorts to murder to procure bodies of his ghastly experiment. All of his unholy experiments finally return to destroy him under the lead of the headless Sir Eric Moreland Clapham-Lee, reanimated with a severed head during the Great War. The headless Doctor managed to round up the other surviving creatures and broke into Dr. West's Boston laboratory and in front of his assistant, took vengeance upon the doctor for his malicious and unholy acts, tearing him limb for limb and carrying him off.

This is the point at which we continue the story. Set in Dr. West's Boston labratory, we see the reconstructed corpse of Herbert West on an operating table, awaiting reanimation in the same ghastly way as those who came before him.
